On the other hand, walking this year with Ellery Channing, during an excursion to White Pond, Thoreau writes: “We had much talk of books and lands and arts and farmers." Something had clicked with Channing, even more than with most of his friends, and, in the wild, with the civilized world far away, Henry loved to talk freely with him. More generally, Henry had the autistic trait of lecturing at length on his obsessive subjects, rather than conversing, and withdrawing with apathy or offense from all other topics of conversation.
